Alabama House Minority Leader Anthony Daniels Joins One Country Project Board
One Country Gains Historic Southern Democratic Leader
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The One Country Project today announced Alabama House Minority Leader Anthony Daniels – the youngest and first African-American person to hold the position in the state’s history – to its board.“Daniels’ commitment to public service and his breadth of experience serving rural, southern communities will bring a new, essential voice to our board,” said founding member and former North Dakota Senator Heidi Heitkamp. “He has dedicated himself to serving students at every level and from every background – educating elementary and middle school students as well as advocating for college affordability. This dedication to quality education for young people, including those from rural communities and those living on reservations, is an integral part of One Country’s mission.”
“I have long fought for better educational opportunities for Alabama’s young people, and I know from experience the opportunity gap rural students face,” said Daniels. “These communities are looking for leadership and solutions, and I am proud to help open that dialogue with One Country.”
Daniels began his career serving as the first African-American man elected chairman of the National Education Association (NEA) Student Program. In this position, Daniels advocated for college students seeking a career in public education and for making higher education more affordable – working with the Bush Administration to pass the College Cost and Reduction Act of 2007. Daniels went on to serve as an elementary and middle school teacher, learning firsthand the impact teachers have on their students, an experience he credits for his continued path in public service.
In 2009, Daniels was appointed chairman of the legislative committee for the Huntsville, Alabama NEA and the State Board of Directors for the Alabama NEA in 2010. In 2012, he returned to his alma mater, Alabama A&M University, as a Corporate and Foundations Relations officer until he was elected to the Alabama House of Representatives in 2014.
