One Country Statement on November Jobs Report

WASHINGTON, D.C. One Country Project co-founder Heidi Heitkamp issued the following statement after the release of the November jobs report:

“The November jobs report is the latest evidence that without additional economic support from Congress, families and businesses across rural America and the rest of the country will continue to suffer,” said One Country Project co-founder Heidi Heitkamp. “Even as some sectors, such as hospitality, seem to be ‘bouncing back’ from the deep crater caused by COVID-19, it is important to contextualize these as lost jobs being regained – not new jobs being created. Millions of Americans remain out of work.

“The markets have rallied after President-elect Biden’s victory, and I am confident in his ability to help rural communities build back better with smart investments in infrastructure, green jobs, and by promoting a coherent trade policy that champions American manufacturing and agricultural exports. However, President-elect Biden can only do so much on his own. It is up to Congress, particularly Republicans should Majority Leader McConnell hold the Senate, to protect working families from the economic turmoil wrought by the global pandemic.

“Slowing job growth is proof that the American economy remains fragile, and rural Americans – like all Americans – deserve leaders who care about their lives and their livelihoods.”
