One Country Statement on July Jobs Report

WASHINGTON, D.C. One Country Project co-founder Heidi Heitkamp issued the following statement after the release of the July jobs report:

“Two days ago, President Trump said on Fox News that we would have ‘another big job number on Friday.’ Well, it’s Friday and the job number is anything but big. With only 1.8 million jobs added last month, it is a far cry from the bounce the labor market experienced in June. Even with the economy adding jobs, we are still down around 13 million jobs since February and unemployment remains over 10 percent.

“Republicans in the Senate have taken a ‘wait-and-see’ approach while rural families go hungry and farm bankruptcies surge. The president has prolonged instability by refusing to take responsibility for the nation’s economic and public health crisis while insisting on a payroll tax cut – a move that would do absolutely nothing to help the millions of Americans currently out of a job.

“We are experiencing unemployment rates higher than during the Great Recession of 2008. As emergency funds for businesses and the unemployed run out, it is abundantly clear more must be done to ensure the initial recovery that began in June can continue. If President Trump and Republicans do not finish the job and instead quit at the halfway point, we will have mounting permanent job loss and irreversible economic damage in rural communities across the country.”
