One Country Statement On Q2 GDP Contraction and Unemployment Filings

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Heidi Heitkamp, Founding Board Member of the One Country Project, issued the following statement after the Bureau of Economic Analysis announced Q2 GDP growth for 2020, which showed the GDP shrank by 32.9 percent and initial unemployment claims increased for the second week in a row.

“The president who likes to brag about the greatest economy in history is now responsible for the worst quarter of economic contraction on record. President Trump’s refusal to take the COVID-19 pandemic seriously has cost lives and resulted in massive economic losses. The 32.9 percent contraction in GDP is proof of his inability to lead. He discouraged and delayed sheltering in place policies, he flip-flopped on wearing masks. And rural families and businesses have paid the price.

“President Trump’s failed economic leadership also continues to take a toll on American workers. This is the second week in a row that initial unemployment filings increased. With an additional 1.4 million American workers filing for unemployment this week alone, roughly one in five Americans are jobless. We have not even climbed out of the economic hole COVID-19 and Trump’s lack of leadership put us in, and the economy is already backsliding after the modest gains we saw in May and June.

“President Trump has not served the American people well. In fact, he’s barely served the American people at all. He is not doing all he can to build up a sustainable economic recovery for rural economies or families. He is failing, terribly, and his Republican enablers in Congress need to stop playing politics. Lives and livelihoods are on the line.”
