One Country Statement on Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims

Weekly Claims Rise for the First Time Since March

WASHINGTON, D.C. One Country Project co-founder Heidi Heitkamp issued the following statement after the release of last week’s state unemployment weekly claims report.

“Today’s disheartening jobless claims report shows that, under President Trump’s failed leadership, there’s no relief from the coronavirus pandemic and no recovery for the economy. Consumer confidence is crashing, jobless claims are once again on the rise, and critical unemployment benefits still aren’t reaching millions who are waiting in line or shut out in the gig economy.

“With more than 30 million Americans seeking jobless benefits and climbing, now is exactly the wrong time for President Trump and Republicans to drag their feet on extending critical unemployment benefits. They should extend and enhance those benefits now.”

A report by the University of Michigan shows consumer sentiment for the month of July has dramatically decreased since the previous year, more than a 25 point drop, and decreased from the previous month, more than a six point drop – all due to the resurgence in COVID-19 cases across the United States. In key states like Wisconsin, claims from last week totaled more than 25,000, and in Texas, more than 86,000 Americans filed for assistance.
