One Country Statement on April Jobs Report

Report Indicates That While the Economy Looks Strong, Not Everyone Is Benefiting

Washington, D.C. – Tessa Gould, Executive Director of the One Country Project, issued the following statement after the Department of Labor issued its April jobs report, which showed the economy created a steady 263,000 jobs.

“While the market is holding firm and continued to add more jobs last month, it is important not to overstate the strength of our economy for all workers. The reality is that the number of jobs for wage and salary workers in agriculture was unchanged from March. And, for the third straight month, manufacturing employment has stayed stagnant, all while the rest of the economy has seen strong gains. Unemployment rates remain disproportionally high for black and African American and Hispanic and Latinx groups, and U.S. farmer income has dropped to the lowest point since 2016.

“We can talk about ‘making America great again,’ but until America’s Heartland is also benefiting from a strong and robust economy, President Trump is breaking yet another promise.”
