One Country Statement on August Jobs Report
Trump's Erratic Behavior Permeates Economy with Uncertainty
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Tessa Gould, Executive Director of the One Country Project, issued the following statement after the August jobs report, which showed employment growth slowed from July, with 130,000 jobs created last month, and the unemployment rate remaining at 3.7%. This jobs report follows the first contraction in the manufacturing sector in ten years, the first drop in business investment in three, and stagnant labor force participation.“We have heard it from the agricultural sector for a long time: President Trump’s erratic behavior, vacillation on trade deals and tariffs, and inability to protect American consumers is having a detrimental effect on the American economy. He projects uncertainty, not confidence, and domestic markets are reacting accordingly.
“President Trump continues to brag about and take credit for a booming economy, but the reality is jobs numbers have missed projections and been revised downwards three months in a row. Without the addition of 25,000 temporary census jobs, this report would be even weaker. American workers and American businesses deserve a president who works for them, not one who undermines their livelihoods with inconsistent trade policies decreed via Twitter.”
