Heitkamp Statement On President Trump’s Announcement of a Partial Trade Deal with China
American Farmers Have Heard This Before, and This Trade War May Have Landed a Lasting Blow
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Heidi Heitkamp, Founding Board Member of the One Country Project and former Senator of North Dakota, issued the following statement after President Trump announced a partial trade deal:“Whether this is Phase One or Phase 100 in the trade talks with China, President Trump’s actions continue to foster uncertainty and volatility for farmers suffering under this trade war. Farmers have ceded longstanding agricultural markets to other countries, stockpiled record amounts of their harvests, and are filing for bankruptcy at staggering numbers.
President Trump may be celebrating, but farmers and rural communities are still hurting, and it is going to take more than words to make America's farming community whole. We need to see it in writing before we can trust that we have a trade deal that rural America can take to the bank.”
