One Country Statement on November 2019 Jobs Report
Trade War Continues to Weigh on Economy as Uncertainty Slows Hiring
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Tessa Gould, executive director of the One Country Project, issued the following statement after the November jobs report. The report showed employment growth increased from October, with 266,000 jobs created last month. These numbers include part-time employment due to the inability to find full-time jobs.“President Trump is sure to hang his hat on a ‘resurgence’ in the manufacturing sector, which contributed 54,000 jobs to this report. However, 75 percent of the manufacturing jobs ‘created’ are in auto manufacturing, which suggests these numbers are inflated by the thousands of General Motors employees returning to work after the conclusion of their strike.
“Without the built-in boost of returning auto workers, the November number reflects a continued slowdown in job growth compared to last year. Furthermore, unemployment in farming and related occupations increased to 11.1 percent compared to 9.8 percent last year. Overall, the labor market showed slower growth than the same period in 2018, missing last year’s mark by 18,000 jobs.
“Private payrolls added the fewest jobs in six months and the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported job openings fell to seven million in September, a decline of 277,000. Taken together, this paints a clear picture: President Trump’s policies and reckless trade war have done lasting damage to the American economy.”
