One Country Statement on the September Jobs Report

WASHINGTON, D.C. Today, One Country Project founder Heidi Heitkamp issued the following statement after the release of the September jobs report:

“The September jobs report reflects the reality thousands of Americans are facing right now, as communities struggle with resurging COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations primarily due to the Delta variant. Especially in rural America, low vaccination rates and dismal public health precautions have forced many to avoid restaurants, travel, and work. As we enter the holiday season, it’s critical that lawmakers in Washington take steps to ensure American workers can get back on their feet and get back to normal.

“The formula is simple – greater investment in American communities, including investment in effective education around COVID-19 vaccines. The American Rescue Plan and nationwide public health efforts have been fantastic success stories so far for the health and welfare of Americans, and we must now build on those successes.

“Sweeping legislation like the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and the Build Back Better Act will do this, in addition to bringing new, good-paying jobs and economic opportunity to families in every corner of the country. These economic investments will bolster communities’ climate resilience too, which is all the more important as increasingly dangerous weather patterns test our local infrastructure.

“With many rural communities still without adequate access to broadband, health care, and transportation, and even more facing the devastating impacts of climate change, Congress must act soon to give American families the support they need to lead the 21st century economy.”
