President Biden’s Proposed Budget Outlines Fiscal Responsibility, Support for Working Families

WASHINGTON, D.C.  Today, the One Country Project (OCP) issued the following statement in response to President Biden’s fiscal year (FY) 2024 discretionary funding request:

“After months of debate over federal spending and the debt limit, President Biden has presented a budget that aims to cut $3 trillion, a crucial step towards getting the United States’ fiscal house in order. At the same time, President Biden’s budget ensures that curtailing federal spending does not come down on working families and vulnerable populations.

“We are pleased to see investments that will protect rural Americans by lowering costs of health services and prescription drugs as well as expanding access to affordable, high-quality pre-K, childcare, and health care. The budget also outlines programs that build upon previous legislation spearheaded by Democrats in Congress such as the Inflation Reduction Act, American Rescue Plan, and Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, and continue the clean energy transition and revitalize run-down rural infrastructure.

“While the Biden administration has put forward a comprehensive budget, Republican lawmakers have thus far failed to put together a plan to address the deficit beyond a patchwork of threats to hold the debt limit hostage in order to cut essential programs like Medicare, Social Security, and SNAP. We cannot afford to play games with our economy nor with Americans’ lives. We look forward to working with Congress to ensure that the 61 million Americans living in rural regions of our country have access to much-needed resources and good-paying jobs that afford them the dignity they are due.”
