One Country Statement on May 2023 Jobs Report
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, One Country Project issued the following statement after the release of the May jobs report:
“May’s addition of 339,000 jobs shows the enduring strength of the labor market, which has gained 13 million jobs since President Biden took office. Even in the face of debt default uncertainty, the economy―which the Biden administration and Democrats in Congress bolstered with the American Rescue Plan, the Inflation Reduction Act, and the CHIPS and Science Act―continues to provide opportunities for Americans’ employment, growth, and success.
“This report comes on the heels of the Senate’s passage of a bill to lift the debt limit, an eleventh-hour deal brokered by President Biden to avoid the economic catastrophe that would’ve resulted from defaulting on our debt.
“While the agreement maintains efforts to bring manufacturing and clean energy jobs to America’s heartland, economic uncertainty still weighs on Americans’ minds. The bill’s expansion of work requirements for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program beneficiaries, just after pandemic-era SNAP provisions ended, further impedes the ability of low-income Americans to simply feed themselves, heightening food insecurity throughout the nation. As Congress’ attention turns to the Farm Bill, we must ensure that this legislation expands the ability of hard-working Americans to access the resources they need to live and succeed in rural America.”
