OCP Founder Senator Heidi Heitkamp Issues Statement on the Passing of Senator Dianne Feinstein

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, One Country Project (OCP) founder Senator Heidi Heitkamp issued the following statement on the passing of Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), the longest-serving female senator in U.S. history:

“When a politician and person of Dianne Feinstein’s magnitude passes away, the whole country feels the void of her loss. While there is much conjecture and political debate about the implications of this sad event, we must take today to honor and celebrate the life of this amazing woman.

“Senator Feinstein dedicated her life to serving the people of California and this country, and her impact can be felt in communities around the world. She was a trailblazer for women in politics, becoming the first female mayor of San Francisco and the first woman to be elected to the Senate from California. In the Senate, she continued to pave the way as the first woman to chair the Senate Intelligence and Rules Committee and to be the Ranking Member in the Senate Judiciary Committee. As she broke barriers, she uplifted other women, mentoring and extending friendship to those who followed in her footsteps.

“In an increasingly polarized Washington, Senator Feinstein understood the importance of bipartisanship, and was willing to reach across the aisle to make sure good governance got done. Her legislative accomplishments, spanning three decades in the Senate, include federal coordination for Amber Alerts, conservation of millions of acres of California desert that created the Death Valley and Joshua Tree National Parks, reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act to protect women from domestic violence and sexual assault, and the creation of the Respect for Marriage Act that enshrined marriage equality into federal law.

“Today, we mourn her passing, express our condolences for her family, and honor her legacy as an incredible stateswoman, force for good, convener, and a dear friend. I will miss her dearly.”
