One Country Project Releases Platform to Build a Future for Working Families
In first of six Rural Playbook releases, OCP outlines policies for reproductive and maternal health, paid family and medical leave, and child care
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, One Country Project (OCP) released the first policy points of its 2024 Rural Playbook. The Rural Playbook equips Democrats in rural areas with critical facts and talking points to connect with rural voters. The first of six editions, Building a Future for Working Families, shares how access to reproductive health care, improving maternal health outcomes, supports for child care, and paid family and medical leave are winning issues that can ensure residents have fulfilling lives in their rural communities, without having to relocate to larger metro areas.
The vision for rural America laid out in Project 2025 and the GOP Platform purport to support working families, but fail to offer solutions to the problems rural families face. Instead of expanding Americans’ ability to access and afford life-saving services, from reproductive and maternity care to paid leave benefits, far-right leaders have a record of denying families access to critical support programs, failing to renew the child care tax credit, removing women’s ability to plan their families, and attacking health care systems.
“Working Americans deserve real and tangible solutions that enable them to plan and raise their families, not mere lip service,” said OCP founder and former U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp. “Expanding access to women’s health care, paid family leave, and child care are crucial policies that improve health outcomes for entire families, ensure money stays in the pockets of hardworking Americans, and bolster businesses’ bottom line.”
In Building a Future for Working Families, One Country Project outlines talking points that support:
-
Reproductive health, emphasizing support for women’s right to make their own reproductive choices without the interference of politicians and judges;
-
Maternal health, and how every woman deserves access to quality pre- and post-natal care as well as reliable delivery care, regardless of their zip code;
-
Paid family and medical leave, a pro-family and pro-worker policy that enables health, economic stability, and business growth; and
-
Child care, access to which reduces families’ financial stress, improves workforce retention, and positively impacts early childhood development.
