One Country Statement on U.S. Food Insecurity and the Farm Economy

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, One Country Project (OCP) issued the following statement after the U.S. Department of Agriculture released its Household Food Security in the United States in 2023 report and its 2024 Farm Income Forecast:

“As the future of America hangs in the balance, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s latest reports on U.S. household food security and the farming economy paint a grave picture for rural Americans. Food insecurity has risen above 13.5%, hitting rural households especially hard and preventing Americans from putting food on the table.

"It is outrageous farmers’ incomes have declined for the second year in a row, reflecting lasting damage from former President Trump's trade wars and his temporary government handouts coming to an abrupt end. Any residual boost from those short-term payments is long gone and farming communities across the country continue to lack the support they need.

“The reality of the farming economy and food insecurity in the United States is staggering. Rural communities cannot continue to struggle under these conditions. As Congress gets back to work, legislators must prioritize passing a Farm Bill that strengthens food assistance and provides critical support for farmers so they can prosper.”
