One Country Statement on February CPI Report
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, One Country Project (OCP) issued the following statement after the release of the January CPI report:
“February brought another month of mixed economic signals, and today’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) report reflects the uncertainties in the U.S. economy. Inflation fell slightly to 2.8%, down from 3% in January, narrowly beating expectations. This progress may be short-lived as tariffs imposed by the Trump administration threaten to increase costs.
Unfortunately, this mild improvement in CPI does not fully capture the economic realities faced by rural Americans, who experience higher costs due to limited access to goods and services. The index for food continued to increase this month, driven primarily by a 10.4% increase in the cost of eggs.
Unpredictable trade relationships with our largest trading partners only add to the uncertainty. The uncertainty in the America economy is being exacerbated by a tepid jobs report, declining consumer spending, and persistent inflation concerns intensify, as President Trump’s trade wars wage on.”
