One Country Project Statement on State of the American Economy
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Recently, the Q1 GDP in addition to the April jobs and CPI reports were released. Today, One Country Project (OCP) Founder and Chair former U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp issued the following statement regarding the current state of the American economy:
“April saw 177,000 jobs added to the U.S. labor market and the unemployment rate remained low at 4.2%, despite President Donald Trump’s unpredictable and contentious policies. The president’s actions have created fears that the American economy is on the brink of a recession and economists predict workers will eventually feel the burden of the trade wars later this year.
“The annual inflation rate hit 2.3% in April, which is less than economists expected and the lowest since February 2021. However, President Trump’s tariffs just started to hit the U.S. economy and the resultant price increases from them have not fully registered. The U.S. economy declined by 0.3% in the first quarter of President Trump’s presidency, almost entirely as a result of the trade war he started.
“These economic numbers reflect an extension of the robust economy with cooling inflation and rising employment that was handed to President Trump by former President Joe Biden. Despite President Trump’s chaotic attempts to overhaul the nation’s economic system, he hasn’t managed to completely stall the economy yet. However, with this administration’s erratic approach to trade compounded by the reckless gutting of government agencies and fixation on passing yet another tax giveaway to the wealthy elite, the prospect of economic ruin lurks on the horizon.
“One Country Project remains committed to serving as a voice for rural Americans in today’s complex political landscape. While recent economic numbers lack strong signs of a strained economy, it’s only a matter of time before the impact of President Trump’s aggressive policies becomes reality and catalyze an economic nightmare. We urge the administration to refocus itself on the American people and implement policies that will make our country a better place for everyone, rather than prioritizing an agenda that solely caters to their beliefs and core base.”
