One Country Statement on January 2020 Jobs Report

The Uptick in Jobs Belies Revised Numbers from Previous Month

WASHINGTON, D.C. Tessa Gould, executive director of the One Country Project, issued the following statement after the release of the January jobs report. The report showed employment growth up from December 2019, with 225,000 jobs created last month. Unemployment also increased to 3.6 percent and average hourly earnings year on year did not meet expectations.

“President Trump’s favorite medium of communication – Twitter – speaks to his bite-sized attention span and inability to comprehend long-term trends. While he has spent the last year boasting about creating the best economy in history, he ignores the fact that these upward trends started well before he took office.

“President Trump’s tendency to lie and misrepresent facts is also reflected in the downward revisions of previously reported job growth. The revisions offered in today’s report are historical in scope, meaning the jobs numbers Trump loves to brag about have not been as strong as he wants the American people to believe. We now know the economy added more jobs in every year between 2012 and 2016 than it has during any year that Trump has held office.

“The cherry on top, of course, is the continued stagnation in the agricultural sector and manufacturing, which saw a loss of 12,000 jobs. Roughly the same number of jobs were also lost for those working in motor vehicles and parts. Again and again, Trump takes credit for an economy that seems to sustain itself not because of his policies, but in spite of them. The American people deserve better.”
