One Country Statement on June Jobs Report
Trump’s Policies Are Leading to a Stalled Economy
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Tessa Gould, Executive Director of the One Country Project, issued the following statement after the Department of Labor issued its June jobs report, which showed the economy created 224,000 jobs, and the unemployment rate rose to 3.7. Although this is an increase from May 2019, there are still significant concerns about uncertainties looming over our economy.
“Today’s jobs report proves that it takes more than braggadocious tweets from President Trump to sustain our economy. Growth is slowing, and this is most obvious when you look at the hiring numbers from agriculture and manufacturing – the sectors that provide paychecks for many hardworking rural Americans.
“While the president continues to take credit for the economy’s gains which disproportionately benefit large corporations, he refuses to acknowledge that a significant number of Americans, particularly those in rural counties, continue to face financial hardship. Agriculture growth dipped by 50,000 jobs and manufacturing remains stalled, with growth at 15,000 less than this time last year.”
