One Country Statement on September Jobs Report

Trump's Volatility Creates Uncertainty in Economic Outlook

WASHINGTON, D.C.  Tessa Gould, Executive Director of the One Country Project, issued the following statement after the September jobs report, which showed employment growth ticked up from August, with 136,000 jobs created last month, and the unemployment rate declining by 0.2 percent. This jobs report follows the second contraction in the manufacturing sector in as many months, which brought the sector to the lowest level since June 2009.

“At a time when the manufacturing sector is experiencing its first contraction in a decade, President Trump continues to escalate his trade wars, expanding his target from China to include European allies as well.

“Economic growth under President Trump is uneven and lower than the same period last year, and maintenance workers, manufacturers, and those associated with the agricultural sector like farmers and fishers experienced an increase in unemployment rates compared to the same period last year. The U.S. is expected to add around 1.9 million jobs this year, down from 2.7 million jobs in 2018. It has become increasingly clear that for all of President Trump’s bluster, his volatile trade policies and failed leadership are weighing on the broader economy and hurting rural communities.”
